VW Powered MasterCraft - Am I Dreaming???

Master Craft and Volkswagen

This week end Ian Birdsall was in Enniskillen for the final tournament stop of the IWSF Word Cup. Ian brought Martin Sneider over, an engineer from the VW factory in Germany to unveil something special from Master Craft. I can say that what I saw impressed me very much. A VW diesel powered Master Craft Pro Star 190.

The boat looks the same as any other Master Craft as you can see from the photo above, but under that cover is a three litre Volkswagen turbo diesel engine.

Martin said,

"The engine is a marine version of the one you will find in the Audi A6 and A8, a V6 producing 225 BHP. The benefits over a petrol engine are reduced noise level and improved fuel economy. Even though the horse power is lower it has the same acceleration as its petrol equivalent."

I watched the boat during a demonstration at the site after the finals had finished on Sunday. I could see no black smoke and the only sound when to boat passed was from Glenn Campbell as he carved his way through the slalom course. After his ski Glenn said,

"It has a beautiful pull, very strong, but forgiving."

Freddy Krueger went out next over the jump and said,

"Neat, I couldn't hear the boat!"

Martin finished off by saying,

"We still have some final development work to do over the winter and the integration with a speed control system, but the engine should be available in a Master Craft by Spring."

Ian Birdsall, the driving force behind this concept said,

"For the customer to accept a diesel powered ski boat it has to be "good" not just "good for a diesel" the response we have had from the top level skiers and drivers here this weekend would indicate we have surpassed that requirement.

Having carried out more than 5 years research and development on diesel options we are better placed than any other ski boat manufacturer to bring this product to the market.

With the current climate of high fuel prices and increasing concern over emission output set to continue in the future we are looking forward to offering this environmentally friendly and efficient option to our customers."

Innovators and instigators who've made an impact on NH

NH Originals by NH Outlook highlights the innovators and instigators who've made an impact on New Hampshire and the world. For more check out

The McDonald's Brothers
During the 1930's, Manchester brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald had dreams of making it big in Hollywood. They moved to California and found jobs at Columbia Pictures, moving lights and sets. It wasn't exactly the jobs they had in mind! They soon gave up on their Hollywood dream and, in 1948, opened a restaurant in San Bernardino. It was the start of the fast food phenomenon in America-and the birth of the McDonalds franchise.

Ralph Baer
Fast, flashy and exhilarating, video games have captured our interest and excitement. But did you know that a gentleman from New Hampshire is actually credited as the "father of home video games?" Ralph Baer from Manchester came up with the idea in 1966, while waiting for a co-worker at a bus terminal. It was a Eureka! moment, but it took him a while to realize it.

Dean Kamen
New Hampshire's own Dean Kamen has a passion for invention and could one day rank up there with those who've revolutionized the way we live. Kamen holds more than 150 patents, including the Segway Human Transporter, the heart stent, a portable dialysis machine and the independence mobility system or IBOT wheelchair. Kamen is currently field-testing a water purification device that could revolutionize how third world countries produce clean water.

Arthur Walden & the Chinook
When veteran dogsledder Arthur Walden wanted to create a breed of powerful sled dogs, he crossed a St. Bernard mix with a Greenland Husky and the gentle, fun loving Chinook sled dog was born. In 1928, Walden and 100 of his new Chinooks joined Admiral Richard Byrd on a South Pole expedition. The original dog named Chinook did not survive the expedition. But the breed Walden created and lovingly nurtured lives on.
Sarah Josepha Hale

Sarah Josepha Hale
Born in 1788 in Newport, New Hampshire, Sarah Josepha Hale left a lasting impression on America. For 20 years, Hale lobbied senators and Presidents to declare an annual Thanksgiving observance. In 1863, her efforts paid off, when President Lincoln declared a Thanksgiving Day. Hale was also an author (she wrote the "Mary Had a Little Lamb" nursery rhyme, among other works), and the first women's magazine editor in America.

34mph 22off & 36mph 22off Slalom Waterski Pass

Video taken last weeekend Aug 5th with some windy conditions during a practice session after a tourney. Fighting my 36mph pass due to not "counter rotating" on my turns and "bow legged" 2,4 right knee drag.

Already have worked on bringing outside shoulder back to help stand taller on ski during turn to bring ski around faster. Working great, but haven't dialed in the muscle memory quite yet to be able to do it in my sleep. Quite evident at yesterday's tourney that just couldn't remember everything to do during both rounds on fell on my opening pass each time!!! Ahhh, next tourney in a couple weeks, YAHHH!!!!

Screening and disposal of such items will take place at the security checkpoints and at the departure gates. Examples of prohibited items include but are not limited to: bottled water, all beverages such as juice and milk, shampoos, toothpaste, perfumes, aerosols, hair gels, oils, lotions and creams.

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE.

Items that fall within this category include:

* All beverages of any type in any size container, including bottled water.
* Shampoo

Such items may be transported in checked baggage.

Exceptions include:

* Baby formula or breast milk, only if a baby or small child is traveling
* Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket
* Insulin and essential other non-prescription medications

Beverages purchased in the sterile area must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted onboard the aircraft.

Any item that is liquid or gel-like in form, will only be allowed in the passenger's checked baggage.

Travelers should anticipate longer lines and slower processing by the TSA at the security checkpoints as a result of the additional security measures. Please plan accordingly to assure that you have sufficient time to get to your departure gate to board your flight on time. Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to departure for Trans-Pacific flights and two hours prior to departure for Inter-island flights.

Aloha Airlines would also like to advise our customers on steps you can take to ease your travel experience during this period:

* Pack lightly, without clutter to facilitate easier screening.

22 Month Toddler steady on water skis

Toddler steady on water skis

Twenty-two month old Cole Marsolek of Menomonie took to water-skiing right away.
MENOMONIE — Twenty-two month old Cole Marsolek of Menomonie took up water-skiing last Wednesday on his training ski.

Since that time the boy has skied everyday on Tainter Lake and only taken one spill, according to his mother Lissa.

“He absolutely loves it,” Lissa Marsolek said. “He popped right up the first time. He is a little showboat waving to everyone and blowing kisses at people as we go by.”

Cole has great balance, she noted.

The training ski is shaped like a sled and Cole travels along at idle speed pulled by his parents Mastercraft ski boat.

Both Lissa, 26, and her husband Chad, 31, have water-skied since they were children. Lissa started when she was 3 years old.

“It’s a little in Cole’s blood,” she noted.’

Cole is able to say a few words. When asked what he wants to do he says, “Ski, please.”

He also is able to say “fall” and when asked if he is ready to ski he says “Go,” the tot’s mother said.

Cole has enjoyed the water since he was 3 weeks old. But prior to learning to water-ski his parents made sure he understood floating with a lifejacket and holding his breath. He is not allowed down by the water or in the boat without his lifejacket.

So if his parents mention about going down by the lake or boating, he gets his lifejacket right away.

There is always someone on the back of the boat to jump in if Cole does fall.

The couple has a 5-month-old daughter, Kinsey, as well. If she is also enjoys water-skiing she will be allowed to try as soon as she is ready, Lissa said.
